Turnstile: same shape rotated, or a mirror image?
Same shape rotated, or a mirror image?
Two shapes, side by side. Turn the right-hand one over in your head — if it lands on the left one, it's the same shape, just rotated. If it doesn't, no amount of turning will make it match: it's a mirror image. Turnstile is built on mental rotation, one of the oldest and most-studied tasks in spatial cognition.

What "mental rotation" actually is
In 1971, researchers Roger Shepard and Jacqueline Metzler showed people pairs of 3D shapes and timed how long it took to say whether one was a rotated version of the other. The finding that's held up ever since: the more you'd have to rotate a shape to match it, the longer people take — meaning people are actually turning an image over in their head, not just pattern-matching. That mental rotation ability is a core measure of spatial reasoning.
How Turnstile trains it
Two shapes appear. One is a rotated copy of the other, or it's a mirror image that no amount of rotation can turn into a match. You decide which, under a visible clock. There's no shortcut but the real skill: rotating the shape in your mind and checking whether it lands.
Why it's not like your other brain training
Nothing else here asks you to manipulate an image in your head before answering. Every other game reacts to what's on screen as it is; Turnstile asks you to change it first, mentally, and then compare — a distinct kind of spatial thinking most games in this category skip entirely.
Questions about Turnstile
What is mental rotation?
It's the ability to imagine an object turning in space and predict what it would look like from a different angle. It's one of the most-studied spatial reasoning tasks in psychology, dating back to a classic 1971 study.
What's the difference between "rotated" and "mirrored"?
A rotated shape can be turned to match the original exactly. A mirrored shape is its reflection — no amount of rotation alone will ever make it line up, which is the distinction Turnstile is testing you on each round.
